JEREMY CROSS COLUMN: Martinez needs to go, Rooney’s new role, Villa’s next owner?

THE FA have got it badly wrong in deciding to stage FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.

The home of football is a sacred place and one that used to make reaching the final so special in the first place.

We are blessed to have some fantastic stadiums up and down the country in which to stage semi finals.

Villa Park, Hillsborough, Old Trafford and Goodison Park to name but a few.

Reaching Wembley should be a privilege reserved for the last game, but these days the final itself doesn’t feel quite the same in a competition that has become more and more maligned in recent seasons.

WAS Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin born to become Aston Villa owner?

Jianlin has donated almost $200m to charities and there isn’t a more needy football cause than Villa right now.

But it gets better.

The mega-rich businessman funded the restoration of an ancient temple in Nanjing and also shelled out $200,000 to renovate the ‘Electric Fountain’ in Beverley Hills.

In other words, Jianlin has no problem splashing his cash on bringing relics back to life again.

Villa have become a dinosaur of a football club, but if Jianlin decides to buy them then who knows what might happen.
