The Goodison captain returned for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester United, but his presence was not enough to inspire victory, with the Red Devils going through thanks to a 2-1 win.

Anthony Martial’s stoppage-time strike broke the hearts of Blues fans and, to make matters worse, their skipper is now set to miss the final four league games.

Roberto Martinez already has a defensive crisis, with Ramiro Funes Mori suspended and John Stones also struggling with stomach cramps in recent weeks.

Jagielka, who is fighting for a place in England’s squad for Euro 2016 this summer, is now set to miss the games against Bournemouth, Leicester City, Sunderland and Norwich City.

Everton have endured a poor season and defeat in the FA Cup semi-finals, along with their lowly league position of 11th, has left Martinez’s future in serious doubt.
