The Stoke goalkeeper says he has sympathy for Manchester City rival Hart after his high-profile errors at the European Championships.
But the 23-year-old says that won’t stop trying to oust Hart from the Three Lions’ starting XI.
“It’s a massive stage and he made some errors that he won’t make again,” said Butland who was ruled out of the tournament with a broken ankle.
“That’s the nature of goal keeping and he’s still someone I look up to.
“Maybe it will give me an opportunity, but it’s still down to me to perform and show everyone what I’m capable of.
“Who knows who the new manager is going to be and how things are going to pan out.
“But the number one spot is what I want and I think everyone is aware of that anyway.”
Butland is on track to be fit for Stoke’s first game of the season at Middlesbrough on August 13.
