I’ve done all I can – Phelan

Mike Phelan believes he has done enough to prove he is worthy of taking the Hull City job on a permanent basis.

Phelan was placed in caretaker charge after Steve Bruce reluctantly walked out on the club before the season got underway, and has impressed with the way he has helped to steady the ship.

It comes as something of a surprise that Phelan has not yet signed a deal to make his position more official, but it is hoped that will be done during the international break.

Phelan is confident that will happen and believes he has done everything can to show he is the right man to take the club forward.

“It’s a situation where things just need to be ironed out,” he said. “I think I’ve been put on trial, I think I’ve been put in the mix where can I or can’t I do the job. I think I’ve shown that I’m capable, that the players have responded well. The fans have seen a change in approach by the players and I just want to make sure it’s a done deal.

“Let’s get it done and over the line as quickly as possible because I felt this opportunity, the break, would be a chance to settle into the job and make some movement, make some changes, galvanise things and get this club ready for the challenge between now and Christmas. That, I hope, will still happen but we need another cup of tea and some cake.”
