Varney was on the scrapheap this summer before Mick McCarthy took him back to Ipswich for a second stint.
The ex-Blackburn frontman was so resigned to dropping down the Football League that he thought McCarthy’s phone call was a joke.
He added: “I thought Mick was calling me just to ask me a question and I said ‘I’m just going out for a run’.
“But he said ‘No, no, I’ve got a question for you ‘Would you like to come back?’. And I ‘Yes, of course I would’.
“So I came back from my run and he told me he’d sorted someone else out. That was a kick in the teeth. But luckily he was joking!
“He said ‘No, no get yourself down tomorrow we’ll look after you. I didn’t need a lot of settling in.”
