Williams was first loaned to Ipswich in February 2014, and had two further loan spells there during the 2014/15 season, making this the fourth temporary stint at Portman Road.

The 22-year-old impressed for Wales as Chris Coleman’s men reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016 but the midfielder has struggled to cement a first team place for the Eagles.

Yohan Cabaye, James McArthur, Jordon Mutch, Chung-yong Lee and fellow Wales international Joe Ledley already vie for selection in central midfield at Selhurst Park and the competition for places is fierce.

Williams did suffer an ankle injury during Palace’s final pre-season fixture but is expected to return to fitness in the next week, where he will look to help Ipswich achieve promotion.

The Welshman could be installed straight into Mick McCarthy’s starting line-up for the Championship clash against Reading a week on Friday.
