Imbula, who cost the Potters £18.3million when arriving from Porto back in January, is fighting for his place in the Stoke side after being left out of the squad that drew with Manchester United last time out.

Stoke return to action this weekend when they take on Sunderland, and all eyes will be on the team sheet to see if the midfielder makes Mark Hughes’ starting eleven.

Either way chairman Coates says Imbula will be determined to bounce back and show he is worthy of a place in the first-team again.

Coates said: “I am sure Giannelli will want to prove himself – and prove himself to the manager. He’s the one who picks the team. He’s a huge talent and he’s got to show he can get up to the speed of the Premier League; that’s the challenge for him.

“He’s got loads of ability and I hope the fans will be patient with him to show his potential. We all need encouragement and he is no different.

“I hope everyone can get behind him like they get behind the rest of the squad.”
