‘I’m not VINDICTIVE!’ EU’s Barnier takes dig at Davis over ‘termination’ threat

The Frenchman, however, sought to remove any blame for Brussels in any further hold up of the Brexit negotiations, insisting “Time is short and we haven’t a moment to lose if we want to succeed”.

Mr Barnier took a sly dig at Mr Davis, after the Brexit Secretary criticised the Commission’s decision to release documents warning Britain could face tough sanctions if transition rules are breached.

Mr Davis said: “I do not think it was in good faith to publish a document with frankly discourteous language and actually implying that they could arbitrarily terminate in effect the implementation period.

“That’s not what the aim of this exercise is, it’s not in good faith, and we think it was unwise to publish that.”
