The season has come to a close, but Liverpool’s place in the Europa League final has still led to some questions.
One such question currently doing the rounds is: if Liverpool win the competition, would it impact the club who has finished fourth in the Premier League?
And the answer is: no, it wouldn’t.
Manchester City’s place is safe.
Winning the Europa League would award the Premier League a fifth place in the Champions League, so Liverpool’s result has no bearing on qualification for the top four.
Fourth place was only at risk of missing out on the Champions League had Manchester City progressed to the final, won the tournament, while finishing outside of the top four, as well as Liverpool claiming the Europa League trophy. In that case, the same scenario as the 2011/12 season could have occured, in which Chelsea lifted the European Cup and took Tottenham Hotspur’s qualification place, despite Spurs finishing fourth and Chelsea ending up sixth in the Premier League.
The Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla takes place Wednesday 18 May, kick off 19:45 BST at FC Basel’s St. Jakob-Park in Switzerland – and it’s live on talkSPORT.
