The enigmatic striker put the seal on a first-up win under Jose Mourinho, after Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney had already netted to give United a clear advantage.

The visitors were not at their best in the first half, when Mata profited from a defensive blunder, but United were far better after the break as Ibrahimovic came to life.

“We weren’t at 100 per cent but in the second half it became easier,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports 1.

“It was a good game, a good start and it was important to start with a win.

“It’s not easy. Everything is new for me. Slowly I get settled in, play my game and make my team win.”

Rooney was pleased to leave a venue United lost at last season with three points, adding: “We created chances and looked a threat on the counter attack.

“There’s positives to take from game – getting three goals and three points is the most important thing.”
