Hull City 0-4 Arsenal: Olivier Giroud ends goal drought to book Gunners’ place in FA Cup quarter final

Olivier Giroud ended his goalscoring drought as Arsenal beat Hull 4-0 in the FA Cup fifth round replay.

Arsene Wenger’s side booked their place in the quarter final – a home clash with Watford on Sunday – but it was not all positives for the French manager.

Giroud may have ended an 11-game goalless streak, but Per Mertesacker, Gabriel and Aaron Ramsey all had to be taken off with injuries.

There was a period of stoppage in the first half after German defender Mertesacker clashed heads with Manchester United loanee Nick Powell – but the 31-year-old was not able to continue despite his best efforts.

Shortly before the interval the Gunners – who were held to a goalless draw by the Championship side at the Emirates last month – took the lead as Tigers captain David Meyler sent a poor pass along his box. Giroud acted quickest, mopping up and finishing coolly past Jakupovic, who was an outstanding performer in north London last time out. That was Giroud’s first goal since January 13, when he netted twice in the 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Ramsey replaced the injured Gabriel after 57 minutes and Giroud doubled Arsenal’s tally 14 minutes later as he caught Theo Walcott’s pinpoint cross to fire home a stunning second, a day after the birth of his son.

Walcott was on the score sheet six minutes later as Campbell sent a through ball across the box, the England winger coolly finishing. While celebrations took place, Ramsey went to his manager to complain of a niggle and he was duly replaced.

With two minutes left on the clock, Walcott – now with the captain’s armband – sent a low shot which deflected past Jakupovic at the near post.

With Arsenal now in the quarter final, their upcoming game with West Brom has now been cancelled and instead they host Quique Sanchez Flores’ men on Sunday afternoon.
