Stoke boss Mark Hughes has other targets lined up if he fails to land Saido Berahino with Liverpool’s Christian Benteke one option.
Berahino remains Hughes’ top summer transfer target and the Potters boss is increasingly hopeful he will land the former England Under-21 international in a deal worth around £12-15million.
However, there is interest from across Europe and elsewhere in the Premier League for Berahino and the deal is yet to be confirmed, despite initial talks being held and both the Baggies and the player himself seemingly open to the switch.
A rival club could yet gazump Stoke’s offer, with West Ham, Crystal Palace and Sunderland among those keeping an eye on his situation, while Berahino’s exit from the Hawthornds depends on the Baggies signing a replacement first.
If Hughes misses out on the 22-year-old then he will look elsewhere for a new striker and Benteke could be one possible option. The Belgium forward is expected to leave Liverpool this summer and is a top target for Palace, but Stoke could decide to pursue the former Aston Villa man if they get frustrated in their attempt to land Berahino.
