James Milner converted a late penalty to give Liverpool a 2-1 win over the Swans after Roberto Firmino’s header had cancelled out Leroy Fer’s early effort for the hosts.

It was a fourth win on the bounce for the Reds and moved them up to second in the Premier League before the rest of Saturday and Sunday’s action, but Henderson said they had been poor at the start of the game at the Liberty Stadium.

He said: “The first 25-30 minutes we didn’t come out the blocks quick enough and Swansea punished us from the set-piece. It was disappointing.

“But the last 10-15 of the first half we got going again and got our rhythm and came in at half-time, and the manager had a few words to say and second half we came out and I thought we were brilliant.”

Milner echoed those sentiments, adding: “It needed to be better and credit to the manager and all the boys. He was angry but kept most of it in and said what needed to be said. He got us going and second half was like we’ve been playing.

“First half we were not really at the races and we know they’re a good team. We gave ourselves all the work to do but showed a lot of character to come back from a goal down away from home and get three points.”

Milner scored his fourth penalty of the season in south Wales and as long as he keeps tucking them away he will remain satisfied.

He said: “It was a big moment in the game and we had chances in the second half and it was important that I took that and it went in the net and we got the three points.”
