Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says winger Rachid Ghezzal should stay with the French club despite West Ham and Everton’s interest.
Aulas has revealed Lyon accepted “a very high offer” for the Algeria international from the Toffees, who were also prepared to offer him a better salary, but he now hopes the winger will stay put.
Aulas said: “We have a case of a young player – brilliant, nice, intelligent – who had a great half to the season last year and who had a very high offer from Everton, a transfer that we accepted because it was also interesting for the club, refused even though it would have allowed him to multiply his salary by 20 on last year.”
Ghezzal was a target for the Hammers as well this summer but the 24-year-old could now extend his deal at Lyon instead.
Aulas added: “Rachid is coming to the end of his contract and we can’t prevent observers from thinking that he might prefer to wait to be free next January rather than accepting an offer from OL.”
