Gold revealed on Monday that the Hammers would make a bid of £25million for a top player based in England this week, leading to speculation that they were ready to step up their interest in either Liverpool’s Christian Benteke or Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

However, several reports now claim it is in fact Leicester hot shot Vardy who is the subject of West Ham’s bid as they look to land the man who fired the Foxes to the Premier League title this season.

Vardy’s deal is said to contain a £25million release clause and the Hammers have reportedly offered to double the England international’s wages in the hope they can persuade him to move south.

It could be difficult to prise the 29-year-old away from the King Power Stadium given the Foxes can offer Champions League football next season and the Hammers may have to look elsewhere to land the marquee name they want to be the face of their move to the Olympic Stadium.
