The former Leeds United star tore his hamstring in the draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday and now faces a long spell on the sidelines which is a massive blow to the player who has only just broken in to the first team.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has had a injury nightmare to his defence this season, although he is hoping Aaron Cresswell will be back after the international break, and Byram’s injury is just the latest in a long line of problems.

The manager told reporters: “It was a shame that it happened to him when he had his chance. It is his hamstring. He heard a pop. We don’t know the length.

“Sam Byram’s injury is serious. It was his hamstring and it won’t be days. Sam heard something and it’s a big blow.”
