In Turkey, meanwhile, group stage representatives Beşiktaş suffered defeat in the nation’s own traditional curtain-raiser, going down 3-0 on penalties to Istanbul rivals Galatasaray at the end of a 1-1 draw.

As for French title holders Paris, they triumphed 1-0 at Bastia before Alexandre Lacazette fired a hat-trick in Lyon’s 3-0 victory at Nancy.
