Southampton keeper Paulo Gazzaniga has joined Rayo Vallecano on a season-long loan, paving the way for Alex McCarthy’s arrival.
The 24-year-old Gazzaniga joined Saints from Gillingham in 2012 and has made 23 appearances for the club but heads to Rayo on loan to get regular first-team action in the coming season.
Southampton’s executive director of football Les Reed told the club’s official site: “Paulo is a very popular player at the club and has developed steadily since his move from Gillingham, never letting us down when he has been called upon.
“He is now at the point where regular competitive football is required for him to progress to the highest level. Playing regularly for Rayo Vallecano will provide invaluable experience for him.”
Saints have Fraser Forster as their first-choice keeper but are hoping to sign Crystal Palace’s McCarthy as back-up following Gazzaniga’s loan, while Kelvin Davis has retired and Maarten Stekelenburg has joined Everton this summer.
