Southgate has held individual meetings with his players – including Joe Hart, who was England’s best player in Slovenia – and the personal touch has endeared him to a group which already hopes he remain in situ.
“He’s been brilliant,” said Jordan Henderson, who was captain in Slovenia until Rooney’s late introduction from the bench. “He’s spoken to the players as a group and individually as well and that has helped.
“The players have got on really well with him this week. We’re close as a group and we’ve had meetings about what we want to do as a team.
“So we need to put in the performances, not just for ourselves, but the fans and him and the coaching staff as well to make sure we keep working together for a long time to come.”
