Southampton are waiting to see if defender Florin Gardos will be fit for the new Premier League season after he suffered a setback.
The 27-year-old Romania international central defender, who joined the Saints from Steaua Bucharest in summer 2014, has not played a competitive game for the club since suffering a serious knee injury in a friendly win against Feyenoord 12 months ago.
Gardos did return to training at the end of last season and made several appearances for the Saints’ Under-21s, but never managed to feature in the first team.
However, he has been making good progress over the summer with a view to forcing his way into new boss Claude Puel’s plans in the Premier League this coming season.
But it’s been confirmed that he suffered a fresh injury before Saints jetted off for their pre-season trip to Baltimore and was left behind at Staplewood to receive treatment.
It’s not believed to be too serious so Gardos will now look to recover quickly and ensure he is in contention to face Watford in the Premier League curtain-raiser at St Mary’s on August 13.
