Chelsea appear to have lost out on Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster after it was confirmed he had signed a new five-year deal.
Forster has been a target for the Blues, amid uncertainty over the future of first-choice custodian Thibaut Courtois, and the England international had claimed interest in him from the Londoners was “flattering”.
However, he has always professed he was committed to the Saints and has now penned a new deal that ties him to the south-coast outfit until 2021, ruling out a summer switch to Chelsea.
“There’s real ambition around the place and it’s good to be a part of it,” said the 28-year-old after signing his extension.
Forster’s new deal means the Blues may look for alternatives if Courtois, who missed the midweek draw at Liverpool due to illness, makes a move away this summer, although there are conflicting claims over the former Atletico Madrid loanee’s future.
There have been regular suggestions this season that the Belgium international wants out of Chelsea, but the player himself has been quoted recently as saying he is “100 per cent certain” to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Several top La Liga clubs and French champions Paris Saint-Germain are all watching Courtois’ situation closely.
