Now, all these years later, it is hard to imagine a Stoke backline without him at the heart of it.
But Shawcross believes he will not get a chance to pull on an England jersey again until current boss Hodgson departs.
His only appearance for his country to date came as a substitute against Sweden back in November 2012, when he endured a torrid 16 minutes against Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Stoke skipper, who is battling to be fit to start against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool today, said: “I have been playing well for the last three or four years and I don’t seem to be getting in, so I can’t see it changing unless the manager changes.
“Either he doesn’t think I’m up to it or the lads he’s picking are better than me. Is that unfair? Yes – but it’s a ruthless game.”
Stoke boss Mark Hughes said: “He deserves another chance but his way to the team seems blocked.”
