The former Newcastle United defender signed for MLS outfit Portland Timbers in America this summer.
But when Taylor, 30, was looking for a new club after the Magpies released him, it took him first to Turkey.
He was in talks to sign for an unnamed club when the military coup broke out in Turkey on the night of July 15.
Taylor could not get back to his hotel as he watched tanks on the street go by as the military tried to take down its own government.
“I couldn’t get back to the hotel on the night of it,” Taylor said as he continues to partner fellow Englishman Liam Ridgewell in the heart of the Timbers defence.
