Five reasons why Sunderland are in a relegation battle and five reasons why they’re not

5. Prophet of doom

Was Moyes being honest or unnecessarily pessimistic when he told fans to brace themselves for another relegation struggle?

It’s hardly what supporters want to hear when they’ve only just returned from their summer hols.

And what about the players he’s inherited? They were feeling pretty good for themselves a few months ago.

Now they’re being told to prepare for the worst. It’s hardly motivational stuff.

Moyes is wrong

1. Relax, don’t panic. No need to worry

Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton and ….eh Sunderland.

That’s right, the Black Cats are among the Premier League elite – at least in terms of longevity.

Only the big six – and Everton – have sat at the top table for longer than Sunderland’s decade.

The Mackems may have their problems but they are part of football’s establishment.
