Pulis is unashamedly old school and long enough in the tooth to know that not everyone can be a clone of the former Tottenham and England star.
So what’s the strangest excuse ever offered up to him as a boss in a career which started at Bournemouth and has taken in Gillingham, Bristol City, Portsmouth, Stoke (twice), Crystal Palace and now West Brom?
“Well, when I was at Stoke, Ricardo Fuller must have had about 40 aunties and uncles, that’s for sure,” he said.
“Every season he would want to go off and have a week in Jamaica and it was always because one of his relatives had passed away.
“He said he would have to get back over there and it was a 10 day ceremony. He’d usually turn up late coming back too.”
