“I’m positive for the country and the England fans,” he added. “I think we’ve got fantastic competition in all positions and not only have we got competition, near enough every player is in very good form.

Since linking up with Ronald Koeman, the Southwark-born full-back has established himself as an England regular, with his club form earning him five caps.

He credits his £10m move to St Mary’s as key in his career revival that was stalling at Stamford Bridge under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

He said: “I think in hindsight if you really take a step back and look at where it’s gone, personally I’ve been very lucky to find such a great club that allows me to play the way that I play.
