EXCLUSIVE: Gareth Barry backs himself to do a job for Sam Allardyce’s England team

17 Sep

And should the call come from Sam Allardyce, Barry says he is ready and waiting.

“I still feel I could play and do a job in that position at that level,” he said.

“I would back myself to play that position as well as anyone who’s English.

“Being left out of the squad really hurts. But these are things you can’t control, so you can’t worry about them.”

Barry, a title winner with Manchester City, has known the highs and lows since his debut in 1998 for Aston Villa in a 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday

And as the elder statesman of the Everton squad, he has plenty of sympathy for team-mate Ross Barkley.
