“When you start getting closer and closer to finals you look at your CV and realise you have not had that chance to go out on the big stage.

“Nobody remembers who has been in quarter-finals and semi-finals, it’s all about getting to the final and giving yourself a crack at winning some silverware.

“It is something I would like to get right if I can and the only way I can do that is if the team does well and we get a bit further.”

Goals from Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku ensured Everton won with Cherries defender Charlie Daniels seeing his first half spot kick saved by goalkeeper Joel Robles.

The Merseysiders were knocked out of the Capital One Cup in the semi-finals by Manchester City and boss Roberto Martinez is convinced his players have learned the lessons from their near miss.

“We got very close to the final and were very unfortunate in the second leg,” he said.
