Southampton boss Claude Puel has cast doubt on Cuco Martina’s proposed move to Everton after an injury to recent signing Jeremy Pied.
The Curacao international was closing in on a move to Goodison Park earlier this week and had even been at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground to discuss personal terms.
But Southampton are now reluctant to let the 26-year-old leave until they know the full extent of Pied’s knee problem.
“We will see. It is a problem, it is a question for Cuco also,” Puel told the Southern Daily Echo.
“We will see if the seriousness of the injury, we will see with Cuco stay or the possibility of another player coming.
“We will see the gravity of the injury with Jeremy, it is a problem.”
Everton will have to pay around £2.5m to land Martina if Puel agrees to let the ex-FC Twente player go before the transfer window closes next week.
The Saints boss added: “For Cuco he still has one year of contract and the possibility to earn another contract with perhaps three or four years with another team and that is interesting to him.
“It’s important also to listen to the player and his situation.
“It’s important to have two good players for every position.”
