It was the Spaniard who originally targeted the 27-year-old stopper in his efforts to replace first choice Tim Howard, who has since left the club to join Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer.

Martinez’s replacement, Ronald Koeman, whose appointment is said to be just a matter of him returning from his holiday next week to sign a deal, is also said to be a fan of the Netherlands international, who has 30 caps and would cost in the region of £12million.

The former NEC Nijmegen shot-stopper had been wanted by Manchester United last season and has two years left on his current deal in Amsterdam.
