Everton centre half Phil Jagielka says the club are coping without John Stones and believes they have actually improved at the back.
Despite last week’s blip at Bournemouth, Everton have enjoyed their best start to a season for years and that has been built on some strong defensive performances, which have come about despite the club selling Stones to Manchester City in the summer.
Jagielka is happy with his new partner Ashley Williams and with the way new boss Ronald Koeman has re-arranged his defence.
“Everyone was expecting John to leave with the size of the transfer fee, and it was important we got one more centre-back in,” said Jagielka.
“I think it’s just getting out to train, spending time together, and communication. It helps that Ash is a similar type of defender to myself.
“The defence is tighter than last year but it will still take a little bit of time.”
