Everton are reportedly close to signing Zenit St Petersburg star Axel Witsel after the Russian club denied being in talks with Napoli.
The Belgium international is understood to be a transfer priority for boss Ronald Koeman and the Dutchman appears to be edging towards his first major signing since taking charge.
Napoli have been claimed to be Everton’s main rivals for the signature of the 27-year-old midfielder, but reports in Russia now cast doubt on their desire for a deal.
According to Tass, Zenit have denied entering talks with the Serie A club over the player – leaving Everton out in front on the race to sign Witsel.
R-Sport claim Witsel is close to joining Everton, although there have also been reports of interest from other Premier League clubs – namely Tottenham and Chelsea.
