Everton fans fear Martinez may also fritter their new-found wealth this summer.

But the Spaniard said: “I arrived at club in 2013 in a very important moment because we lost probably the most important goalscoring threats in the team with Marouane Fellaini and Victor Anichebe.

“And we brought in Gareth Barry, Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy.

“The average age was nearly 30, now it’s around 26. The record is there, the work we have done in those six windows shows the record we have.”

Cleverley put Everton ahead in the seventh minute with a low finish before Pugh equalised moments later after Tim Howard had saved from Josh King.

Baines won the game in the second half with a great finish after he arrived late into the box.

Martinez, though, will remain in discussions with chairman Bill Kenwright and Moshiri with his future hanging in the balance.
