Everton 0 Norwich 2: Steven Naismith sends Toffees out of the EFL Cup

The Norwich striker was a hugely popular figure during his four years at Goodison Park, thanks to his tireless efforts on the pitch and his social conscience off it – even buying tickets for unemployed fans.

He got a rousing reception as he returned to Merseyside in the EFL Cup last night, despite damaging Everton’s bid to win the trophy for the first time.

The Scotland striker scored in front of the stunned home fans on the Gwladys Street End in bizarre fashion three minutes before the break.

Naismith beat Ramiro Funes Mori for pace but then slipped as he shot, with the left-foot effort looping up off his right shin and floating gently into the net.

Goodison Park was stunned – but then home fans on all four sides of the ground gave him a standing ovation.
