England vs Netherlands preview: Three Lions face more quality opposition after brilliant Germany win

28 Mar

England face the Netherlands for the first time since 2012 on the back of the stunning comeback win over Germany in Berlin on Saturday evening.

It’s a big game for…

Danny Drinkwater: The Leicester City midfielder is set to make his international debut on Tuesday after missing out against Germany on Saturday. Drinkwater has been in fine form for the Foxes this season, guiding them to the summit of the Premier League table and the verge of a memorable title. The midfielder has a big task on his hands in matching the performance of Eric Dier against the Germans and staking a claim for a place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euros this summer.

Best stat…

England haven’t beaten the Netherlands in an international friendly for over 30 years – a 2-0 victory in May 1982.

Remember when…

England thrashed the Netherlands 4-1 in a group game at the European Championships in 1996. Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham scored two goals apiece before Patrick Kluivert netted a consolation for Oranje. It remains England’s only win over the Netherlands in competitive fixtures.

Player to watch…

Dele Alli: The Spurs hotshot put in a superb performance against Germany on Saturday and, if selected against the Netherlands, it will be interesting to see whether or not Alli can maintain his high standards against another tricky opponent. An exceptional season for the former MK Dons youngster has seen goals, assists, skill and moments of quality which England fans hope he can replicate in France this summer.
