England stars claim Gareth Southgate has the grit to be permanent boss

Stones added insisted the England players would love to put in winning performances to secure the job full-time for Southgate.

The £47m star said: “He knows the players, he knows the set-up. He has been great for the under-21s when I was there.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Robert Pires yesterday insisted the England job was wrong for Wenger, whose contract is up at the end of the season, because he would have too much time on his hands.

“I know him, he loves being on the pitch every morning,” said the Frenchman.

“This is like an obsession, it’s a passion. You know manager for the national team is not really the same.

“If he takes this job, it’s not the same. So, for the moment I cannot imagine Wenger working for England.”
