Townsend said: “I thought I had a chance, but it’s only when you turn on Sky Sports and see the yellow ticker that you know it’s real.
“I knew if I got back to my best I could get in the England squad. On a personally level it’s worked out, but it’s just a real shame I couldn’t help Newcastle stay in the Premier League.
“Missing the World Cup through injury was the lowest point in my career and now I’ve got the chance to put that to rest and go to a major tournament. It’s in my hands.”
Hodgson’s loyalty to his men is well known and he didn’t forget the man who scored on his Three Lions debut against Montenegro before playing a key role in getting England to Brazil.
“Even when I wasn’t playing much at Spurs he’s always had faith in me and put me in the squad,” said Townsend. “And nine times out of 10 I’ve done well for him.
“Hopefully I can repay that faith in the friendlies and make sure I get in the squad. I’ll do my utmost to make the final cut.”
