The versatile defender looks set to follow Andros Townsend and goalkeeper Steve Mandanda at Selhurst Park. The Eagles triggered Townsend’s release clause at Newcastle and landed Marseille keeper Mandanda for £1.5m.

It was thought Tomkins would end up at Sunderland with former boss Sam Allardyce but he has been out-bid by the Eagles who are moving quickly to assemble their squad for the new season.

Pardew will now turn his attentions to adding a striker to his squad with Liverpool’s Christian Benteke expected to conclude a deal over the weekend.
