The 21-year-old picked up the problem playing for Belgium’s Under-21 side in Montenegro last Friday, coming off after just 33 minutes of the Under-21 European Championship qualifier.

Reports in Belgium are now claiming that Denayer will be missing for between two and four weeks after tearing an adductor muscle.

The news will be a bitter blow to Sunderland boss David Moyes, who has used the loan signing from Manchester City in three of the Black Cats’ last four Premier League games.

Denayer will have to squeeze into an already-busy treatment room on Wearside, with the likes of Jan Kirchhoff, Adnan Januzaj, Sebastian Larsson, Vito Mannone and Fabio Borini all currently unavailable through injury.
