Alli is certain to keep his place for tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier in Slovenia, as is holding midfielder Jordan Henderson, who got the nod as man of the match against Malta after an impressive display, particularly in the first half.
With so much debate raging about whether Rooney is even worth his place in the team, nobody seems to have tackled the issue of who will be skipper if he is absent.
Joe Hart and Gary Cahill have deputised before, but what seems to escaped many is Henderson was appointed captain of Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp, who you suspect did not just pick his name out of a hat.
Henderson is growing week by week in stature and produced the superb inswinging cross for Liverpool team-mate Daniel Sturridge to headed in the opening goal after 29 minutes.
“I’ve been in good form at club level and am just trying to bring that to the national team,” he said.
“I’m trying to do what the manager wants me to do for this team. I still think there’s certain things I can improve and hopefully I can do against Slovenia.”
