Dele Alli has an “aura about him” akin to Paul Gascoigne, according to Tottenham and England legend Teddy Sheringham.
Alli was incredibly impressive in England’s friendly with Germany, proving the stand-out player in a memorable comeback win in Berlin.
The Tottenham player, who came on as a late substitute in Tuesday night’s defeat to the Netherlands, appears almost guaranteed a starting role for England in this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament.
Sheringham, who played 51 times for England, says Alli reminds him of former England midfielder Gascoigne.
“He’s looking a player. I thought he was outstanding in Germany,” Sheringham said of Alli at Carlsberg’s UEFA 2016 trophy tour.
“He had that aura about him in Berlin that Paul Gascoigne had about him at the beginning of his career. It was almost if Dele Alli was saying: ‘Come and try and get the ball off me. And even if you’ve got the ball I’ll nick it off you then I’m going to wander away from you and you won’t get it off me.’
“Gazza used to do that. It had a lovely feel to it I was very impressed. You can’t coach that kind of mentality and self belief it was in Gazza and Dele Alli seems to have something similar.”
Alli returns to domestic action this weekend when Spurs take on Liverpool at Anfield.
