Despite conceding a late equaliser at Southampton on Saturday, Sunderland can still beat the drop, according to Jermain Defoe.
The Black Cats were heading for a vital three points at St Mary’s which would have given them some breathing space at the bottom of the table, until Virgil van Dijk cancelled out Defoe’s opener in injury time.
With their relegation rivals all losing on Saturday, the 1-1 draw moved Sunderland a point clear of the bottom three and Defoe believes the Wearsiders remain on track to stay in the Premier League.
“Personally I think we’ll be fine,” said Defoe.
“I believe from now until the end of the season we will win a few games because of the way we’re playing and the players we’ve got.
“It’s a long break until the next game but I’m sure the manager will prepare the team so we’re ready for that cup final.”
