The Black Cats striker has not given up hope of pulling on an England shirt again but knows he needs to keep banging in the goals for Sunderland if he is to get his chance.

The 33-year-old scored 15 times last season, as he helped the side stay in the Premier League, and he has struck twice in three games already this term.

Defoe, who has not played for the Three Lions since 2013, said: “I believe now with Sam in charge that if I’m playing well and scoring goals I think I’ll get a chance.”
