Borussia Monchengladbach are reported to be weighing up a summer swoop for Stoke City defender Philipp Wollscheid.
The 27-year-old has become a key figure in boss Mark Hughes’ squad since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in January of last year, but reports are suggesting he could head back to the Bundesliga.
Hughes will do all he can to fight off any interest in the player, and Potters skipper Ryan Shawcross also hopes his central defensive partner stays put.
Shawcross rates Wollscheid as one of the best in the Premier League and says they must keep hold of him.
“Philipp has had a fantastic season. He’s been one of the mainstays of the back four,” Shawcross told the Stoke Sentinel. “I think his form has been brilliant throughout the season, and I don’t think you will find a better ball-playing centre-half throughout the league. I really rate him.
“I can’t really comment on the links, but it’s always good to be linked because it means they are doing a good job. I’m sure he’s got a couple of years left on his contract and long may he stay.”
