Ciaran Clark is battling to overcome a calf injury in time to reclaim his place for Villa’s home clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.
Clark missed Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Chelsea, but acting manager Eric Black is hopeful the problem isn’t going to keep him out for much longer.
Black will be forced into a reshuffle because of Alan Hutton’s red card last weekend as the Scotland international will now serve a one-match ban.
It could mean Micah Richards reverts to right-back and Clark comes back into the centre of defence, although Jores Okore is also in contention to partner Joleon Lescott.
Asked about Clark’s fitness, Black replied: “Ciaran told us he was feeling his calf. We tested it during the morning but he was ruled out.
“I am hoping it won’t be too long. But we will have a better idea soon.”
