Steve Davis wants to see more Southampton stars – and the manager – follow Virgil van Dijk’s lead and commit themselves to the club.
The midfielder believes that if the current Saints squad stick together they can go on to achieve even better things next season.
“We know we’ve got the quality to compete with the best teams in this division, but it was just showing that over a consistent level and I think we’re showing great signs of that,” he said. “Hopefully we can keep the squad together and build on it again and then go again next year.”
Davis added that all the squad are “loving playing for” boss Ronald Koeman, who is yet to commit himself to the club on a long-term basis.
He also reckons that Van DijkÂ’s new six-year contract is a massive statement of intent for the future.
“It’s good sign to see Virgil sign an extended contract, hopefully everybody can stay and we can go again,” he added.
On Koeman’s deal, he ent on to say: “That’s important. I think the manager’s spoken about that in his own press conference and said they’ll have that conversation after the season.
“ThereÂ’s been so much change over the last few years… losing important players and obviously losing Pochettino a couple of years ago, but the managerÂ’s come in and done a great job.
“Everybody loves playing for him, hopefully we can keep him and keep the squad together and go again.”
