Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has confirmed Diego Costa will not play in Saturday’s clash against Real Madrid as he has a back injury.
The Blues take on the European champions in their next International Champions Cup game in Michigan as they continue their preparations for the new Premier League season but Costa will not be involved.
The Spain international, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, has been hampered by a back injury in the past week.
Conte said: “I have to see the players in training. If I cannot see them in the training session, I cannot put them in a game.
“Diego had pain in his back, so he didn’t train, and for this reason he doesn’t play.”
Belgium internationals Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard, who have not featured in any of Chelsea’s pre-season games so far, are expected to be given second-half run-outs against Real, but summer signing N’Golo Kante, who trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday, is likely to to have to wait until Thursday’s game against AC Milan to make his debut.
