Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has played down suggestions they are lining up a move for Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
Costa’s second spell with Atletico, between 2010 and 2014, saw the Spain international score 43 La Liga goals from 94 appearances and prompted Chelsea into bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
The Brazil-born striker shone in his first season but his struggles last term were reflected in the Blues’ dreadful Premier League campaign, which saw them finish in mid table and out of all European competitions.
With Antonio Conte now at the helm, it is unclear whether Costa has a future at Stamford Bridge and Cerezo recently stated Los Rojiblancos were close to re-signing him.
“We like him a lot, I’ll admit,” he was quoted as saying. “We are talking to the player and working on him returning to Madrid. It’s close, but I can’t say any more.”
However, the former film producer has since backtracked, telling AS: “I do not speak of players at other clubs.”
