Manchester United have reportedly been dealt a blow by Manchester City in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.
Numerous reports in Spain on Saturday morning state the Red Devils and Barcelona have been beaten to his signature, despite both offering to meet his £40million buy out clause in recent days.
And the Catalan daily, Sport newspaper, say it is because the blue half of Manchester have already reached an agreement to bring him to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Barcelona have learned the 21-year-old wants to link up with their former coach Pep Guardiola in England, and that United have also been told to end their interest.
It’s understood the Old Trafford club have been working on a deal for Laporte ever since they signed his former team-mate Ander Herrera from Bilbao back in the summer of 2014.
The tall French-Basque defender is considered one of the brightest defensive talents in Europe and has long been coveted by City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain.
