Antonio Conte has explained how he intends to utilise deadline day signing David Luiz – with the Brazilian to NOT take up a position in the midfield.
Chelsea completed the signing of their former star in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, bringing in the centre-back to provide cover and competition in the heart of the defence.
However, considering Luiz’s mistake-prone game – and his proven ability in a midfield role – many suggested that such a defensive coach as Conte would want to push the 29-year-old further up the pitch.
But this is not what Conte is planning to do, revealing to Chelsea TV that he sees Luiz as a centre-back.
The Italian coach said: “I think David Luiz is a centre-back, he’s played a lot of games in that position.
“I know sometimes he’s played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre-back. He’s played with Chelsea previously and he will bring a good personality.”
Marcos Alonso, who also signed for the Blues on deadline day, has been tipped to succeed in the Premier League by Conte, due to his experience of English football after time with both Bolton and Sunderland.
“I think it’s important because he’s left-footed. He played in England and for that reason he has good experience of the league,” Conte added.
